The beautiful scarlet macaw (Ara Macao) is one of the most beautiful birds that exist, their scarlet, yellow and blue colors them hard to go unnoticed, in Costa Rica they are easily spotted specially in the Pacific coast, however, this wasn’t always the case, back in the 90’s this was an endangered species.

During that decade the number of scarlet macaws in the country dropped to under 200, in 1992 in response to this , Zoo Ave Rescue Center, through its Center for Reproduction of Endangered Animals (CRAVE) started the project of reproducing this species and liberating them in the areas where they commonly are found.

The success of the project now allows the liberation of 300 scarlet macaws in the areas of Golfito and Jicaral in Puntarenas.

Over 1000 animals of different species, among them the green macaw, scarlet macaw, spider monkeys, great tinamou, to name a few, have been set free throughout the years in areas where their populations had been almost eliminated.
