If you are taking part in this beach race or watching in the audience, consider staying at boutique Hotel Chantel on the hillside overlooking Playas del Coco, for the most relaxing and peaceful lodging experience.

One of Costa Rica’s most popular 5K and 10K races will take place this Saturday, November 30th at Playas del Coco in Guanacaste. The Third Annual Recreational Race of Playas del Coco will start at 4:00 pm and will admit no more than 500 registered runners who will compete across six categories. Although this is a recreational race that encourages amateur participation, runners will compete for a 50K colones (about $100) prize for first place on the 10K segment.

According to abuenpaso.cr, an online community for runners in Costa Rica, this beach race has been one of the most anticipated since many participants make it a weekend getaway. The race starts and ends at Amor de Temporada (Seasonal Love), the main park at Playas del Coco. This scenic race unfolds right on the beach and along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica at a time when the sun is starting to set and the ocean breeze turns cooler. This is more than just an athletic event: It is a family event that includes fun and music.

Children 12 years of age and younger can join the race for free before 3:00 pm. Everyone else must pay the registration fee of 10K colones (about $20), which includes a t-shirt, race number, electronic timing, insurance policy coverage provided by INS, hydration, first aid, and a medal. Those who register after November 15th may not receive a t-shirt or medal. The male and female race categories are Juvenile, General and Masters.

The running surface is estimated to be 50 percent dirt road, 25 percent asphalt and 25 percent on beach sands. Maximum elevation above sea level is about 17 meters. The panoramic view of the coastal sunset tends to distract runners, but it is highly recommended. This race tends to attract many English-speaking expat runners.

As this is a busy race, participants and spectators who plan to stay over the weekend in Playas del Coco are strongly urged to make their hotel reservations now. This might be the last chance to enjoy low season rates. Registration can be accomplished online at the event’s website or in establishments such as the Medical Center at Playas del Coco, the Coco Gym, Los Delfines, and Super Luperon. In Liberia at Centro Deportivo, Energym and Ciclo Guilly, and even in San Jose at Tienda Runners in Pavas.
