Ironman 70.3 will go down tomorrow in Carrillo, Guanacaste with the participation of over 2100 athletes, but only 13 in the category of professional triathletes; among them 2 Costa Ricans.

Leonardo Chacón and Pablo Herrera are the only two “ticos” with professional license and will be competing against 4 representatives from the U.S., 2 from Colombia, and one each from UK, Australia, Guatemala and Spain.
The rest of the competition is divided in age groups and separated by gender.

Pablo Herrera is 25-years-old and has been practicing this sport for almost a decade, however he just started taking part in half Ironman competitions just one year ago when he took part in the 70.3 event in New Orleans, US, however he did so in his age group division. This will be his first time in a more “competitive” level.

Chacón, on the other hand, had his first experience as a pro in a 70.3 in Puerto Rico this past February; he suffered an injury the and was just cleared to take part in this event a few weeks ago, he is clear that the level of competition he will be facing is high and hopes to get more experience in this category.

Out of the 2,100 participants 76% are men and 24% are women and there are 40 countries represented; athletes will complete 1.9 kilometers swimming (1.2 miles), 90 kilometers on the bicycle (56 miles) and 21 kilometers running (13.1 miles) (70.3 miles in total).

Other experienced Costa Rican triathletes will be taking part of the event in the different age categories.
