A total of 59 people died in different accidents during this Holy Week in Costa Rica.

According to the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ) during the week of March 25 through April 1st, 24 people died in traffic related accidents, 11 people were murdered, 8 lost their lives in water related accidents (among them two sisters 5 and 7 years of age who drowned in a river) and 8 were victims of other types of accidents such as fires; eight suicides were also reported. Among these 46 were men and 13 women.

This number in 2018 is higher than the numbers for Holy Week in 2016 and 2017.

The Coast Guard Service also reported having rescued 55 people at risk, among them many foreign tourists. The majority of these rescues took place in different beaches of the Pacific coast, particularly in the Central Pacific, in beaches such as Esterillos, Manuel Antonio, Herradura, Caldera and Doña Ana.

The number of domestic aggression also registers a peak during the Holy Week every year in Costa Rica.
