Ever since I authored, Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica, I have received hundreds of questions from those who are planning trips to Costa Rica. Whether they were planning a research trip to potentially become expats themselves, or whether they were simply looking for a vacation in paradise, they all have similar questions. What should they pack?

In a recent article, The Expat Traveler Survivor Kit, I discuss what the “must have” items include, but today, I want to share with you my review on the best footwear for Costa Rica.

The most well-rounded, multipurpose shoe I have tested in Costa Rica is the Merrell Manistee. It is an excellent hiking shoe with ventilation throughout to keep your feet cool and breathing amongst the tropical heat, at only $54.95 they’re great value too. While hiking in the country with more water per square foot than any other country, you are sure to stumble upon streams, rivers, or other water playgrounds. Not to worry, with these Merrell’s you can jump in with your shoes on! This shoe does the best job at expelling rocks while simultaneously allowing water to leave freely. Plus, the grip on the bottom work splendidly while wet.

I found that Keens work well if you are planning on keeping them relatively dry. Once they are wet, the rubber toe and tread no longer grip, it’s a slippery mess. Plus, river rocks will forever wedge into your shoe, forcing the frustrating stops prying them out, only to repeat the process after the next step or two in the river.

Chocos & Tevas sing to the same song as Keens. Each of the sandals allow in too many rocks for the trek to be enjoyable. Most other shoes were either too hot, or too squishy when wet.
