U.S. Ambassador Haney
To commemorate the 239th anniversary of Independence as well as his recent arrival to Costa Rica, held a formal function at his residence on Thursday afternoon. More than 600 attendants from various sectors of civil society and private enterprise attended the event, which took place in the capital city of Costa Rica.
As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, Ambassador Haney arrived in our country with his family over the weekend. On Tuesday, he held a press conference at the Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano in San Pedro, where he spoke about the potential of our country to attract foreign investment and to be a leader in climate change issues; he also took time to highlight the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on LGBT marriage.
Overall, Ambassador Haney was a gracious host; he took time to meet with Andrew Pike, principal of the holding company that owns The Costa Rica Star to discuss various topics aswell as economic trade for North Americans in Costa Rica.
On the morning after the event, the Ambassador enjoyed a fine cup of coffee made in the traditional cloth filter method.
In his commemorative speech on the upcoming Independence Day, Ambassador Haney spoke about the diplomatic relations between Costa Rica and the United States:
We are united. The bonds that bring our countries together, and which guide our common ideals and objectives, have never been stronger.
The official press release by the U.S. Embassy on the 4th of July celebrations states as follows:
On July 4th, 1776, the United States of America made its Declaration of Independence official. This declarative document explains the decision of the Thirteen Colonies to become independent from Great Britain. The main author of the Declaration was Thomas Jefferson, who wrote about the guiding principals of the U.S.:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
On Saturday, July 4th, Ambassador Haney will not only enjoy the Independence Day celebration of the country he is serving at a very high level; he will also keep Sabbath holy.
