A swimsuit and lingerie model from Costa Rica will be evaluated by a prison psychiatrist in Nicaragua after she allegedly expressed strong suicidal intentions. Such was the report broadcast by Nicaraguan news radio station La Nueva Ya yesterday about Kathia Adriana Corella, who has been incarcerated in that country since early December.

As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, Miss Corella was arrested in Nicaragua during a drug interdiction operation that ended up with a shootout, a suicide, and several arrests.

During a hearing conducted earlier this week in Managua, Miss Corella’s attorney explained to the court that his client had contemplated suicide while in custody, and that her motives for taking her own life were prompted by seeing her former lover shoot himself in the neck to avoid landing in a Nicaraguan prison.

The incident that has mentally traumatized Miss Corella started when the National Police in Nicaragua intercepted a shipment of more than 200 kilograms of cocaine being transported to the northern region of the country. The incident unfolded on the highway connecting Leon with Managua, and the cocaine was allegedly concealed in two vehicles along with more than $800K in cash. A roadside shootout is alleged to have taken place before several individuals were arrested.

Walter Mauricio Pereira Castillo, the romantic partner of Miss Corella and father of her infant daughter, purportedly fled the scene in a Toyota Yaris. Police chased him down to an upscale condominium outside of Managua, which he allegedly rented with Miss Corella for $2,000 per month. It was in the parking lot of that condominium where the National Police claims Mr. Pereira ended his life with a single gunshot to the neck, and in plain view of Miss Corella.

Miss Corella’s daughter was brought back to Costa Rica by officials from the National Council on Childhood (Spanish acronym: PANI). In Nicaragua, Judge Indiana Gallardo ordered a psychiatric evaluation of Miss Corella, who is being charged for drug trafficking and money laundering.
