Toronto, Apr 4 (EFE).– A Mexican construction worker helping to build Trump Tower in Vancouver, British Columbia, placed his country’s flag on the building to protest recent statements by U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

Diego Reyna placed the flag over the weekend, Canadian media reported Monday, and he later posted a photo on the social media posing in front of the Mexican banner at the top of Trump Tower.

The flag was removed on Sunday from the 63rd floor of the building where Reyna, 30, has been working installing steel siding.

“I placed the Mexican flag on the roof of Trump Tower in Vancouver to show that (Trump is) benefitting from us and we’re working hard on his projects and we’re not criminals,” said Reyna, who is from the southern Mexican city of Tuxtla Rodriguez and emigrated to Canada in 2011.

The worker also said that he had been thinking about taking some kind of action for some time because he did not want the real estate magnate’s comments about Mexicans to spread through Canada, “which is a more tolerant society.”

Trump has made controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants, whom he has called criminals and drug traffickers.

The New York businessman also has stated that, if he is elected president, he will build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border to prevent the arrival of undocumented migrants.

Trump’s comments and his policy proposals have been decisively rejected by the U.S. Hispanic community.

A survey released in late March in the United States found that 77 percent of Latinos view Trump unfavorably. EFE
