Agents with Costa Rica’s Drug Control Police (PCD) raided a marijuana grow house in Escazu on Thursday and arrested a 55-year-old Cuban national identified by the last name Ruiz.

Agents said that the suspect was growing a highly potent variety of genetically modified marijuana plants, known in Latin America as “crippy.”

The raid occurred around noon on Thursday. PCD agents confiscated numerous marijuana plants as well as some 24 ounces of retail-ready marijuana, in addition to specialized equipment used for indoor cultivation. Authorities said that the potent strain of marijuana sells for approximately US $250 per ounce or more in the local market.

The raid came after authorities received a confidential tip, according to the PCD.

Ruiz arrived in Costa Rica in November 2013 and was living in Costa Rica with an irregular immigration status, officials said.
