Could you make it on less than $1,000 per month in Tamarindo Beach, one of the most desirable and upscale real estate markets in Costa Rica?

According to a recent article by Jackie Minchillo of International Living, there is a Canadian expat in Tamarindo whose monthly household payments, including rent, are between $400 and $450 per month.

Graham Cooper was born in England but moved to Toronto to work as a mechanical engineer. He visited Costa Rica in 2013 and was charmed by Tamarindo Beach; these days, Mr. Cooper is a frugal expat who feels very much at home in the Gold Coast of Costa Rica.

The International Living article explains that Mr. Cooper receives Old Age Security (OAS) payments from the Government of Canada plus a pension from his former employer. For the record, the maximum OAS pension amount is currently CAD$573.37 (less than US$550). The article does not mention the amount of Mr. Cooper’s pension payment, but he does explain that he shares condo expenses with a roommate.

Furthermore, Mr. Cooper is happy to be living in a warm climate now that he has arthritis, and that he is happy to be able to travel cheaply, specifically to Panama on $27 bus trip (probably a visa run).

According to the real estate professionals at RE/MAX Ocean Surf and Sun in Costa Rica, $1,000 monthly household expenses in Tamarindo Beach would not be unheard of. While it is true that Tamarindo Beach is dotted with opulent beachfront penthouses and imposing Mediterranean estates, there are also many listings that are reasonably priced.

One of the keys to an affordable lifestyle in Tamarindo Beach is to not focus on the main section of the beach. In nearby Playa Grande, for example, casitas (cottages) and residential lots ready for development can be found for less than $80K.
