Costa Rican surfer drowns while surfing in Puntarenas

The Red Cross found Saturday the body of 15 year old Campbell Cardoza, a local surfer that went missing on Friday while surfing in Banana Beach, Santa Teresa de Cóbano, Puntarenas.

Apparently Cardoza was surfing at around 4 p.m. on Friday when he was hit by a tourist’s long-board which caused him to drown, the body was found approximately one kilometer to the east of where the surfer was seen for the last time.

The surfing community mourns the loss of this athlete and prospect.

Some good news for the sport came from Leilani McGonagle and Malakai Martinez:

Leilani McGonagle finished in second place at the Maui & Sons Pichilemu Women’s Pro, QS1500 which took place in Punta Lobos, Chile. This achievement earns McGonagle 1125 points for her ranking. In this same event Emily Gussoni concluded her participation in round 3 earning 450 points.

Meanwhile, in California, Malakai Martinez was crowned as the winner in category U14 of the Rip Curl Grom Search 2016. “I am very happy that I won, there was hard competition and the heat was a lot of fun, but I managed to take a wave and managed a good aerial that helped me get the firs position”, said Martinez.

Martinez is the second Costa Rican athlete to win in this type of events, the first one was Leilani McGonagle.
