Panama’s Public Prosecutor’s Office this week charged the police officer responsible for accidentally shooting a 22 -year-old American tourist in the capital’s historic district April 28, reported local Panamanian media.

In the incident, an agent from the Institutional Protection Service (SPI), a special police unit assigned to protecting the president and the presidential palace area, fired at a taxi driver who attempted to flee from police questioning in the Casco Viejo district.

A judge approved the request of Prosecutor Víctor Raúl Barrios Puga to record the victim’s testimony before he leaves the country, said local media.

The court statement was taken at a private hospital where the tourist is being treated. The American man was injured in the early morning hours last Friday in the shoulder, and was initially provided with emergency care at the public Santo Tomás Hospital, later to be moved to private care.

Police had been questioning the taxi driver, who allegedly did not have a license, and shot at the car when the taxi attempted to flee, accidentally hitting the tourist.
