Well, two days after the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation announced no more closures on the revamped ‘platina’ bridge north of San José, they will be closing it after all this weekend – from 10 p.m. Saturday until no later than 5 p.m. Sunday, said MOPT officials.

The road on both sides of the Virilla River needs to have storm drains installed, said officials, which means large machinery will be blocking access to the bridge in order to pour the cement.

Hopefully, all these delays and closures really will deliver the promise of a top notch 6-lane bridge connecting San José to the international airport in Alajuela and other northern points. Officials have said the structure will have all six lanes ready for the third week in May. Keep your fingers crossed.

The new bridge will be inaugurated the Alfredo González Flores bridge, but in true Tico fashion, the ‘platina’ term, which began to be used when the metal structure of the old bridge over the Virilla River began to be exposed and proved impossible to repair, will probably stick around for a while.

Let’s hope for the best as the final touches go onto this new huge structure that should make access in and out of the city a bit easier for drivers.
