Several communities are currently without electric power in Costa Rica. The Costa Rica Electric Institute has received reports from several areas in the provinces of San José, Cartago, Alajuela, Heredia and Limón.

Costa Rica had not had a blackout affect the whole country for ten years.

The problem apparently is a failure in the Regional Interconnection System which is also affecting Nicaragua and Panama
