An 8.2 earthquake struck Mexico’s southern coast this evening at 22:49 (local time), 78.4 kilometers Southwest of Tres Picos (Chiapas).

Due to the magnitude of the event, a Tsunami alert has been issued for the Pacific coast, however, due to the direction of the energy Costa Rica will not be affected or the effect could be very mild in the form of dangerous currents that because of the hour in Costa Rica (1 a.m. Friday) won’t represent any problems, confirmed the National Tsunami Monitoring System.

The strong movement was followed by a 5.8 earthquake at 23:33 located 239.5 kilometers southeast of Xadani, Mexico.

According to Reuters at least two people are reported dead, in what is the strongest earthquake Mexico has experienced since 1985.
