As Hurricane Irma approaches Florida, Costa Rica Internet service providers have warned that the service could suffer interruptions this weekend since several data centers are based in Florida.

Companies Tigo and Cabletica have already notified clients through their social media accounts:

“We would like to inform you that due to the pass of Hurricane Irma through Florida, USA, some of our services could be affected, this because some of our international providers have their infrastructure in locations that will suffer the impact of this natural phenomenon. Our technical teams are monitoring the situation and are prepared to reestablish the services as quickly as possible”, read the post by CableTica .

A similar notice was posted by Tigo, while Kolbi-ICE has not yet released any information on this matter.

Many datacenters that provide internet connectivity to Latin America are located in Florida, particularly in Miami, and although usually they have back-up systems, the service could be affected by power failures depending on the strength and effects that Irma brings.

In the latest advisory given out by the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center at 5 p.m. EST, Irma is expected to make landfall in Florida as an extremely dangerous hurricane and there is danger of life-threatening storm surge inundation in southern Florida and the Florida Keys during the next 36 hours.

The Costa Rica Meteorological Institute confirmed the country will not be directly affected by Irma, however, heavy rains are expected as an indirect effect specially in the Central and South Pacific.
