While air service through Florida has already started resuming after Hurricane Irma unleashed its destruction over the southeastern U.S. state this past weekend, American Airlines announced they were extending a suspension of flights between San José and Florida until this Friday, September 15.

The airline’s remaining eight flights scheduled for the remainder of the week have been canceled.

Juan Santamaría International Airport operations director, Juan Belliard, said the cancellations apply to four flights from Costa Rica to Miami, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale airports, and four in the other direction.

JetBlue and Spirit who also have routes from Costa Rica to Florida resumed service Tuesday.

Since last Friday, September 8, the category-5 storm caused 60 commercial flight cancellations between San José, Costa Rica and different points in Florida. At least 11 cargo flights were also suspended.

At the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Costa Rica’s northern city of Liberia, Guanacaste, five flights between Liberia and Miami were canceled over the past days, according to general manager of the airport company CORIPORT, César Jaramillo.
