The seismic alert went off in Mexico City at 7:53 a.m. (Mexico time) this Saturday, September 23 as a 6.2 magnitude earthquake was felt again with epicenter in Oaxaca, earlier this same day at 5:38 a.m. a 5.8 magnitude movement took place in the same region.

This seism takes place just 4 days after a 7.1 earthquake with epicenter in the city of Puebla caused devastation in Mexico City and the death of close to 300 people; and 15 days since an 8.2 movement affected Oaxaca and which also took the lives of almost 100 people.

The powerful movement scared the population that is still recovering from the recent events. Rescue work was temporarily suspended to attend the alert. The Mexico National Seismology Service registered several replicas after this movement, with magnitudes 5.2, 5.0, 4.8, 5.1 and 4.9

The earthquake in Puebla earlier this week caused many buildings to partially or completely collapse and structural damages in many others, which is a big concern for the authorities as strong movements continue to hit the country.

Currently seven Costa Rican experts in rescue missions are in Mexico contributing with the Mexican authorities and organizations. The team is formed by an emergency doctor, a paramedic, firefighters and experts in rescue missions all part of the Costa Rica Urban Search and Rescue Group (G-USAR CRC).

After the Costa Rican government offered help to the Mexican authorities, Mexico requested the assistance of a technical team to coordinate rescue work. Each of the members of the team have over 10 years of experience in this type of work and have participated in missions in Haiti and Cinchona, Costa Rica; they have received training in Panama and Colombia.
