A migration officer at the Juan Santamaría International Airport will be subjected to an investigation by her superiors after she allowed one of the suspects in the halloween robberies that took place last Tuesday, October 31, in Escazú, to exit the country.

According to the General Direction of Migration and the digital system “Migración Visible” detected the alert in real time; however, for reasons that are still unclear, the officer didn’t follow procedure, which involved the transfer of the traveler to an office for a second control, an instead allowed the Mexican national to leave the country.

“We will not tolerate corruption in any institutional process, especially when it comes to matters of migratory control and national security,” stated Esteban Obando, director ad interim of Migration.

The Migration authorities confirmed they will carry out their administrative investigation but at the same time they will file a criminal suit against the officer for the noncompliance of her duties and responsibility.

The robberies took place at Eurochronos Jewelry shop in Multiplaza mall and Tiempo Global jewelry in Plaza Colonia, both in Escazú. The Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) confirmed yesterday that both robberies were carried out by a band of 15-20 Mexican men.
