The Consulate of Costa Rica in Los Angeles is handling in coordination with the United States authorities, the case of a Costa Rican minor who was found on Tuesday afternoon at the Arizona desert.

“The six year old child, was rescued by migratory agents of the United States in Luckeville, Arizona, just north of the frontier”, stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.

According to the report by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the child said he was left in that place by an uncle, who in the border told him to continue on his own and he’d be rescued at some point.

U.S. authorities immediately reported the case to the Consulate in Los Angeles, where consul Mabel Segura activated the pertinent intervention protocol.

“The child didn’t speak much, and didn’t provide many details, he just indicated that he lived in Costa Rica and he traveled with his uncle. We are handling the case with priority and in a comprehensive manner. Fortunately he is in good health conditions“, commented Segura.

Costa Rican authorities were already able to identify the minor and communicate with the mother who lives in the United States in an irregular migratory condition. They have also established communication with his family in Costa Rica and the Child Welfare Agency (PANI).

“It is important to highlight that this is a particular case of a non-accompanied minor, and it has no relation at all with the United States policy of family separation“, assures the release.
