The Costa Rican Tourism Board has been clear on the fact that they want to make more emphasis on community tourism, this since the country has a lot more to offer beyond its beautiful beaches and volcanoes; communities are also slowly realizing the potential they posses and are taking it upon themselves to create initiatives that will attract visitors and generate financial benefit and development for the inhabitants.

Zarcero is a city of the province of Alajuela, part of the country of Alfaro Ruiz, a beautiful small town surrounded by coffee plantations and beautiful views. Even though this city does not receive a great number of international tourists, visitors are attracted by its church and its topiary garden. The church has a cottage style and a beautiful interior decorated with religious paintings. The garden right in front of the church, designed by Mr. Evangelista Blanco, showcases differed figures of animals, people and abstract shapes.

However, these are not Zarcero’s only attractions, and this is what the initiative “Discover Zarcero” aims to show both national and international tourists.

Trails, horseback riding, dairy farms, waterfalls and delicious gastronomy are just part of the activities and attractions you can find in Zarcero.

Discover Zarcero brings together different small, family-owned companies. The gastronomy offer includes milk-based products such as cheese and sour cream, homemade bread, bizcochos, and desserts such as stuffed grapefruit and stuffed figs, among many others.

The all-day tour includes a traditional breakfast, a hike through a private property with amazing views and nature, horseback riding to see the waterfall, cow farm, among other attractions.
