At 5:22 p.m. on Friday, August 17, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook Costa Rica.

The epicenter was in the area of Golfito, Puntarenas. The main seism was followed by several replicas with magnitudes between 4.1 and 5.2.

According to Dr. Lepolt Linkimer from the National Seismology Network (RSN) “The origin of these earthquakes is the subduction of the Cocos Plate in the Pacific beneath the Caribbean Plate, the location of the earthquake is in the area of Golfo Dulce, very close to the Osa Peninsula, the movements here are usually originated by the subduction of the Cocos Plate, but also the seismicity here is common due to local faults and also the Panama fracture zone part of the tectonic boundary between the Cocos Plate and the Nazca Plate”.

The earthquake was reported as felt in most of the Costa Rican territory. Minor damages were reported mainly including fallen objects.
