This Monday, November 2nd the National Insurance Institute (INS) began charging the 2020 Marchamo, the vehicle’s circulation permit, similar to the registration payment in the United States; this tax must be paid by December 31st for the 2021 period, otherwise, drivers risk getting a ticket and will have to pay a late fee.
There is a total of 1,568,375 vehicles registered in the country.
Taking into consideration the effects of the pandemic on Costa Rican families, last week the Legislative Assembly approved several reductions on the Marchamo based on the fiscal value of the vehicles.
The reductions applied are:
50% reduction for vehicles with a tax value lower than 7 million colones (approximately $11,500 USD) and for trucks, buses, vans and farming machinery with a value of under 15 million colones (approximately $24,680 USD).
25% reduction for vehicles with a value of over 7 million (approximately $11,500 USD) and under 10 million colones (approximately $16,450 USD).
15% deduction for vehicles with a value between 10 million (approximately $16,450 USD) and 15 million (approximately $24,680 USD).
Motorcycles with a tax value of under 1 million colones (approximately $1,645 USD) are exonerated from the marchamo payment.
The Ministerio de Hacienda (Treasury) also enabled the “Autogestión” system where owners can check the tax value of their vehicles, which has to represent the market value under standard conditions. If any owner considers the calculated value to be incorrect, a claim can be filed online at www.hacienda.go.cr.
