The Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ) detained a 14-year-old this Wednesday as the person responsible for threats made against students and personnel of the San Luis Gonzaga high school.

OIJ searched the house of the suspect in Agua Caliente, Cartago and confiscated a computer, cell phones and USB devices as proof.

The threat was made public on social media using a profile that was later deleted, in the comments under the post it confirmed the objective was to surpass the Columbine High School shooting,which took place in 1999 and caused the death of 12 students and 1 teacher.

¨If I do it I will make history in Costa Rica since no one here has ever carried out a shooting, if I start others will follow, all they need is someone to be brave and do it (…) My plan is to reach at least 30 dead to surpass Columbine¨, read part of the post.

The 14-year-old is a ninth grade student at the institution.

Immediately after the threat was made public, the school suspended classes and worked along with the Public Police Force on new security protocols and routines that will help prevent any possible incidents. Some of the measures include checking the backpacks and regulating the access of external people. Police presence will also be reinforced around the school. Classes will resume this Thursday.

Costa Rican authorities called on all institutions to review their security protocols and keep a close eye on situations that may be happening in the school community that may trigger violent acts. At the same time, they requested the help and involvement of parents to supervise their children and care for their emotional health.
