American jazz bassist Matthew Garrison, will be performing live at the Jazz Café in Escazú, February 16.

The New York musician described by the New York Times as ¨an electric bass virtuoso¨ will be presenting a Jazz Performance with electronic elements alongside Costa Rican artists David Vargas (drums) and Carlos ¨Tapado¨ Vargas (percussion), as well as New York producer/bassist Dan Freeman in the electronic elements.

Garrison attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and began playing professionally in 1994. He has worked with a wide range of artists from John McLaughling to Whitney Houston. He formed the Jack DeJohnette Trio along with Jack and Ravi Coltrane and also owns the Shapeshifter Lab, a music venue and art space that hosts innovative artists looking for a flexible platform to present their work.

Freeman, from Nicaraguan mother, graduated from Harvard (American History), but his passion for music took him to New York City to continue his musical studies. According to his website, he has performed at venues ranging from the Carnegie Hall to ¨bizarre underground Brookyn parties¨. He is currently faculty at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, part of NYU´s Tisch School of the Arts where he teaches electronic music production. He founded the Brooklyn Digital Conservatory. His biggest interest is the integration of acoustic and digital instruments in live performance.

Garrison will also teach a course on musical production that same weekend in DJ Lab.
