A Belgian boy who was on vacation with his family died Tuesday afternoon, August 8, apparently from causes related to having eaten prior to entering his hotel swimming pool in La Fortuna, San Carlos, Costa Rica.

The 8-year-old apparently jumped into the pool soon after eating, was rescued alive from the pool and his vital signs were kept going by a doctor on site and emergency rescue workers before being taken to the nearby La Fortuna Clinic.

Nevertheless, he died at 4:50 p.m. shortly after being admitted to the clinic, having apparently been asphyxiated from his food which caused him to drown in the pool, according to a preliminary report by the San Carlos Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ).

Authorities reported that the child was vacationing with his parents. The family entered the country Saturday, and on Monday arrived at the hotel in La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano.

The body was transferred to the forensic medicine department in San Joaquin de Flores, Heredia for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Initial police reports say that food recently ingested by the boy clogged his airways, causing the boy to to become unconscious, and swallow water in the pool, leading to his tragic, fatal drowning.
