In the world of sports betting, wagers are not limited to outright championship titles, game outcomes, spreads, or proposition bets (also known as live betting). Just about any event related to professional sports can be turned into a wager, and this extends to player transfers, draft picks and even the future of athletes as it relates to their lifestyles.

Earlier this year, a few sportsbooks that specialize in exotic bets focused on the future of NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel, formerly of the Cleveland Browns. The 23-year old Manziel is currently a free agent after a disastrous rookie season that mostly involved him being photographed at nightclubs across the United States, engaging in reckless behavior, getting arrested, and failing to stay sober. During his college football career, Manziel broke numerous records and held lots of promise for a stellar NFL career; alas, those days have mostly eluded him as a pro quarterback.

When Manziel was released by the Browns, things just got worse for him. Thus far in the 2016 offseason, he has faced the possibility of a criminal investigation due to domestic violence, and his efforts to stay sober have been virtually non-existent. Manziel’s attorney has reported seeing a receipt for $1,000 spent by the disgraced quarterback in drug paraphernalia, and even the young player’s father told ESPN:

“He’s a druggie. It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie. Hopefully he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. I mean, I hate to say it, but I hope he goes to jail. I mean, that would be the best place for him. I’m doing my job, and I’m going to move on. If I have to bury him, I’ll bury him.”

Before this sordid state of affairs, The Sporting News reported on an offshore sportsbook that issued the following odds:

• on the roster of an Arena Football team: 19/1
• on the Cowboys’ roster: 19/1

In April, the odds improved a bit for Manziel as analysts spoke about him being signed by the Dallas Cowboys. Sadly, this no longer seems to be the case. At this point, the odds are shifting towards Manziel hitting rock bottom or, everyone hopes, getting sober.
