The hundreds of thousands of people who rang in 2017 in New York City’s Times Square were treated to performances by a long list of big-name artists on New Year’s Eve.

Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan and Silentó headlined the traditional celebration in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, with partiers standing on their feet for hours and unable to leave their chosen spots amid frigid temperatures.

Latin star Don Omar performed hits like “Danza Kuduro,” “Zumba” and “Hasta Que Salga El Sol,” while Luis Coronel got people dancing with “Quiero Ser Tu Dueño” and “Me Voy de Rumba.”

Chinese cultural group SAFA surprised the crowd with a traditional dance and fireworks.

Singer Rachel Platten had the honor of performing the John Lennon classic “Imagine” during the last minutes of 2016.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon joined Mayor Bill de Blasio in pushing the button that started the Waterford Crystal ball’s descent to mark the arrival of 2017 in Times Square.

Ban, who spent a decade leading the United Nations, was replaced on Sunday by Portugal’s Antonio Guterres as secretary-general.

Security was tight for the celebration, with some 7,000 police officers, including counterterrorism units, on duty.

New Yorkers began ringing in the new year in Times Square 112 years ago and the first ball made its descent to mark the start of a new year in 1907. EFE
