Sao Paulo, Mar 30 (EFE).– A Brazilian man strangled his pregnant 16-year-old girlfriend, decapitated her and turned himself into police two days later after riding across Sao Paulo in a bus with her head in a plastic bag, local media reported Monday.
The situation unfolded in the Pedreira neighborhood in the extreme southern part of Brazil’s largest city, when handyman Jose Ramos dos Santos, in a fit of jealousy after his girlfriend evidently cheated on him last December, decided to strangle her, according to the online edition of the O Estado de Sao Paulo daily.
The girlfriend, identified as Shirley Souza, was seven months pregnant.
After killing her last Thursday, the 23-year-old man cut off Souza’s head and hid her body in a closet.
Neighbors and a brother of the killer began to detect a foul odor at his residence, however, and Ramos dos Santos decided to take the body to a nearby vacant lot, where he hid it on Saturday.
Afraid of being linked to the crime and lynched by his neighbors, the murderer then decided to turn himself in to police and rode for 30 kilometers (19 miles) on two bus lines to the police station in Liberdade, the city’s central Japanese section.
Ramos dos Santos confessed to the murder and apologized to Souza’s relatives for the “suffering” he caused them, but he did not express remorse for the crime and told the authorities that “she deserved to die.” EFE
