The ongoing crisis in Nicaragua motivated the decision of Canadian airline  “Air Transat” to cancel all flights to this Central American country during the upcoming winter.

The information was confirmed by Air Transat this Thursday, October 25, and justified their decision “due to the ongoing civil unrest and the weak demand of service”.

This airline had three flights a week scheduled from Toronto and Montreal to Managua, beginning December 20 and through the end of March.
Clients that had reservations to this destination will be able to change it or request a full reimburse.

The crisis in Nicaragua has caused the deaths of more than 350 people and over 2000 injured.

The Canadian Government recommends avoiding non-essential travel to Nicaragua:

“Protests have been occurring throughout the country since April 18, 2018. They have led to violent clashes which have caused a significant number of casualties. Managua, Masaya, Leon, Carazo and surrounding areas are particularly affected. The location and time of these outbreaks of violence are unpredictable, and has have resulted in the presence of heavily armed groups operating around the country, including in Managua”.

The tourism industry in Nicaragua has been strongly affected by the crisis, hotels and restaurants have been forced to close as a result of cancelled reservations and a considerable drop in the number of visitors.

Other airlines such as Volaris had already announced the suspension of its flights, while others had reduced the frequency of flight or changed itineraries.
