A Canadian man and one of his workers are being investigated for the shooting of two Nicaraguan men outside the Banana Beach Bar in the beach town of Santa Teresa de Cobano, Puntarenas, as a result of the shooting one of the man died and the other was injured.

According to the authorities, one of the Nicaraguan men worked as a security guard at the liquor store where the Canadian arrived to buy beer; however, for reasons currently under investigation, both men began to argue, “Apparently the problem began with a stare. It is said that they had already had a similar problem in the past, but this time they ended up in a fist fight”, explained Michael Soto, director ad interim of the Judicial Police Organization (OIJ).

The Nicaraguan’s brother, and another man who works for the Canadian expat got involved in the incident and at some point it seems that the expat’s worker (also a Nicaraguan) took out a firearm from the car and began shooting, killing 27-year-old Francisco Velásquez Miranda and injuring his brother Felix Velásquez, 30-years-old.

The Canadian, of last name Benjamin, and his employee left the scene but later they turned themselves in.

Soto confirmed that neither Benjamin nor the Nicaraguan men had criminal records; the Canadian is known in the area because he works in tourism.
