It is not uncommon that foreigners sometimes appreciate and care more about a country than its own citizens.
That seems to be the case of Canadian Jimmy Vietz, a 45-year-old man that has been visiting Costa Rica for the last fifteen years, and for the past three he spends his vacation time in the county of Atenas in Alajuela, and the neighbors are familiar with him for two reasons, he enjoys the sun and visits the community park frequently to enjoy the summer days, his goatee and chest hair are dyed of different colors and that attracts attention to him; but mainly, because he spends his time cleaning the park, picking up the garbage that others leave behind.
This called the attention of local show +QN of Channel 7 which focuses on positive stories, they went after Jimmy, who speaks perfect Spanish, and he got a chance to explain why he chooses to do this.
“I’m here enjoying the sun, I work a lot in my country, so I have vacation now… I’m staying through the end of March”, explains Vietz.
When asked why he does it, he says “I like seeing everything clean and organized, for me this is very important, to live in a clean place. I feel bad that a bottle like this ends up in the rivers”.
The journalist, Jose Miguel Cruz, asked Vietz, why he dyes his hair and he says “I don’t like being like everyone else, I enjoy color, I also work with children in my country, as a clown, it’s fun”.
Vietz is just one of many tourists and expats that make Costa Rica a better place and set an example for the locals that many times do not appreciate or take care of this beautiful country.
