This week Costa Rica accumulated a total of 300 days of 100% renewable energy during  2018.

The last time the country had to resort to the use of bunker or diesel was back in May 17 in response to the demand of electricity of the country, which means it has ran for more than seven consecutive months without the use of hydrocarbon fuels.

Wind consolidated sa the second source in terms of the contribution to the annual production with a 15%, just behind water that works as a basic resource within the National Electric System, in third place comes geothermal energy, biomass and solar.

The country has reached 98.56% of electricity from the five renewable sources of its matrix of generation. This places Costa Rica, for fourth consecutive year on an annual accumulated total of over 98%. In 2015 it reached 98.99%, In 2016 it was 98.21% and during 2017 99.67%.

¨Numbers show that we have achieved estability at its highest point. The correct planning of the system, for instance with the integration of Reventazon (hydroelectric plant) has been vital in making us an example for the region and the world¨, explained Luis Pacheco, corporate director of Electricity of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).

So far the highest month in terms of generation of electricity has been October with 976.78 gigawatts hour (GWh), all of it renewable.
