Costa Rica deplored the growing repression in Nicaragua and reminded the Government of its obligation to “respect human rights of all people as well as the undeniable need to reopen dialogue”.

The situation in Nicaragua was the topic of discussion when the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States held a special meeting on Thursday, December 27, in Simón Bolívar Hall at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.

The session was presided by the Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the OAS, ambassador Montserrat Solano.

Costa Rica reaffirmed its support and solidarity to the work of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts and the Special Mechanism of Follow up for Nicaragua that have documented the serious deterioration of Human Rights in Nicaragua. It also expressed its rejection to the expelling back in December 18 of these mechanisms from Nicaragua, decision taken by the Nicaraguan government.

“Costa Rica as a peaceful country, calls on the international community to join multilateral efforts to guarantee the full respect of human rights in Nicaragua, the reopening of dialogue to reestablish peace, understanding and the protection of the integrity of the democratic system, promoting the normalization of the institutionalization in this country”.

The representative of Costa Rica proposed to work based on the recommendations of the Group of Independent Experts to identify the route to a solution, however, this requires the contribution the Nicaraguan Government to act in good faith and open the doors to collaboration and dialogue.
