The XXIII Central American and Caribbean Games celebrated this year in Barranquilla, Colombia, came to an end this August 3rd. Costa Rica concluded its participation with 26 medals in total.
Costa Rica only won one gold medal, which came from the participation of Andrea Vargas in the athletics competition of 100 meters hurdles.
The country also achieved six silver medals, three in taekwondo, two in racquetball, and one in female soccer.
The rest of the medals were bronce, achieved in the following disciplines: karate (3), bowling (3), boxing (2), swimming (2), cycling (1), taekwondo (4), athletics (1), racquetball (3).
Costa Rica had a total of 250 participating athletes, 130 male and 120 females representing the country in 23 out of the 36 disciplines that were disputed during this tournament.
The country that took the highest number of medals was Mexico with 341 (132 gold, 118 silver and 91 bronce); followed by Cuba with 242 and Colombia 270.
Henry Nuñez, president of the Costa Rican Olimpic Committee, commented in an interview with La Nacion that the participation of the country did not leave him entirely satisfied, he considers that sports in the country are at a 30% of their true potential, but high performance “requires a stable investment and better conditions”.
