Costa Rica inaugurated this Saturday, March 30 its biggest solar energy generation park yet, the Cooperative Solar Park (Parque Solar Corporativo), located in the area of Pocosol in San Carlos.

This park will benefit close to 5,000 families of the North Zone of the country; it has 19,000 devices to capture solar energy in an extension of 11.2 hectares that will produce 5 MW, guaranteeing the quality and continuity of the electric service even during the dry season when the rain decreases.

The project was developed by engineers of Coopelesca and the National Council of Electrification Companies, with assessment from experts. The cost of over $6 million USD.

Omar Miranda, General Manager of Coopelesca, explained that during the dry season the availability of water is reduced, and therefore, it is of great value to explore new options of renewable energy to guarantee the electric service to all its associates.

Coopelesca is the first Carbon Neutral Cooperative in Latin America.
