“Innovative, forward-looking approaches and ideas” are needed, said Minister of Foreign Trade Anabel Gonzalez at the pre-conference event of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. Our Minister was invited to address the conference by the Secretary General of the UNCTAD, Supachai Panitchpakdi.
Fresh from her visit to the INDIASOFT 2012 IT and B2B expo in Hyderabad, Minister Gonzalez was invited to the conference due to the success of Costa Rica in implementing trade measures as key strategies of national development. The UNCTAD will meet in Qatar this coming April, at which time Minister Gonzalez will present the results of the strategy. The focus of the UNCTAD will be on sustainable development.
In Geneva, Minister Gonzalez also noted that “South-South” commerce, trade activities between developing countries, “is expanding with such speed that it will soon become the mainstream of international trade flows.” The challenges faced by global trade range from: “climate change to the energy resource crunch and food security concerns, [which will] require a paradigm shift in industrial and agricultural production processes.”
Prior to her appearance at the pre-conference event, Minister Gonzalez stated that, over the last 25 years, Costa Rica has been implementing different efforts to improve the integration of the country into the international trade system and to exert greater advantage from the global economy.
The main benefits from opening up to global trade are intrinsically tied to economic growth, greater employment, and better quality of life for the people of Costa Rica. Issues like those addressed by the UNCTAD allow us to share our own experience, and at the same time learn about the best practices to adopt and continue improving.
