After the failed participation in the Russia World Cup, Costa Rica’s male national soccer team La Sele is looking for a new structure, a new strategy, new figures and a new direction.

Under the temporary command of head coach Ronald Gonzalez, La Sele had its first test against South Korea this Friday September 7; without some of its known and main players (Bryan Ruiz, Keylor Navas, Celso Borges), the Costa Rican team fell 2-0 in a game that was dominated by the Koreans.

Even though several changes were made in the lineup and the game plan was also a bit different presenting four defenders, 5 midfielders and only one attacker, the main problems remain the same, no offensive game, and no flow between the plays. The lack of communication among the players was also evident in the field.

A penalty opened the score at minute 35’, even though Son Heung-Min failed on the execution and the ball hit the post, Lee Jae-Sung scored from the rebound.

The Koreans took command of the ball, they displayed good speed and established a good defense, Costa Rica never generated real danger for its opponent.

The second goal came in the second half, at minute 77’ when Nam Tae-Hee capitalized on an error of the defense, David Guzman slipped, and the rest of the defenders were unable to contain the Korean player.

“La Sele” needs to choose a permanent head coach as soon as possible, it needs stability and direction.

Costa Rica will face Japan in Osaka on Tuesday, September 11, while South Korea will next face Chile in Suwon, just south of Seoul on the same day
