June has been a busy month for board culture lovers across the world. On June 20^th, surfers in many parts of the world celebrated their favorite activity with special events, and the next day skaters in Detroit gathered to celebrate Emerica’s Wild in the Street -an event that stands to symbolize international skateboarding. In Costa Rica, those events will be celebrated this weekend.

International Surfing Day

Over the last eight years, the Surfrider Foundation has designated June 21^st (or June 20^th in leap years) as International Surfing Day (ISD). Surfing communities across the world organize activities to celebrate this special day, and the protection of the oceans and aquatic life is a theme that ISD organizers often call attention to.

The Surfrider Foundation in Costa Rica is currently at the Witches Rock Hotel in Tamarindo, holding a quick surf tournament for women and children. Later this evening there will be live bands, a silent auction and special raffles. People in Guanacaste who want to join or find out more about the Surfrider Foundation in Costa Rica are cordially invited. Those who can’t make it on Saturday evening can always join their Facebook Group and stay updated on their activities.

Emerica Wild in the Streets

For the fifth year in a row, skaters in Costa Rica will command the streets of San Jose tomorrow Sunday, June 23^rd. Emerica already held the main event in Detroit, but skateboarding culture in Costa Rica appreciates the relative peace that a Sunday morning in San Jose brings.

The Arenas Surf & Skate retail chain in Costa Rica is coordinating tomorrow’s event. In previous years, the Wild in the Streets celebration has also garnered support to build skate parks, donates skateboards and obstacles in low-income neighborhoods, held raffles, skate demos, graffiti shows, etc. You can expect the same and more this year.

Wild in the Streets is about taking advantage of a lead vehicle -a discomovil- that will provide riders with a soundtrack for a long trip from Barrio Aranjuez to the Park of Peace. Please note that the meeting point and route have changed from the original plan. Skaters will meet at 9:00 AM at the Barrio Aranjuez sports complex. The route is about 6 kilometers, which could mean a lot of pushing -not a problem for switch foot skaters.
