On Saturday July 25th Costa Rica reached another record on the number of new confirmed cases of Covid-19 with 931. This brings the total to 14,600 since the pandemic reached the country at the beginning of March. 10,960 cases are active.

A total of 98 patients have now died. Through July 1st, the country only registered 17 deaths related to the virus, which means that in just the past 24 days there have been 81 deaths. Back on July 1st the number of patients hospitalized was of 56 out of which 6 were in intensive care; today, there are 293 people in the hospital, 51 of them in the intensive care units.
Among the last 11 deaths reported there is a 41-year-old woman that had no underlying health conditions.

Of the total number of confirmed cases 10,466 are Costa Rican while 4,134 are foreigners.

50% of the new cases registered are from patients n the counties of San José, Desamparados, Alajuelita and Corredores (Puntarenas).

Health authorities announced they have inaugurated a new tower in the Calderon Guardia Hospital in downtown San José which includes 75 new intensive care beds and 50 regular hospital beds; this also involved the hiring of over 600 new employees.

A refrigerated container, to safely place the bodies of Covid-19 related deaths, was installed at the San Juan de Dios Hospital.

This Saturday there were reports of people walking to the Basilica de Los Angeles church in Cartago as part of the country’s tradition “La Romería” which takes place officially on August 2 in honor of the country’s patron the Virgen de Los Angeles. Authorities of the catholic church called on the population to stay home, and don’t go out for the pilgrimage,

“We want to call on the conscience of all of you so that you follow the guidelines given by our health authorities. In this context please do not go out for the pilgrimage. Since the beginning of the pandemic we have been asked to stay home unless it is strictly necessary to go out due to work or an emergency”, stated priest Jose Francisco Arias, of the Basilica de Los Angeles. The church has created an option for a virtual “Romería” through the page RomeriaVirtual2020.com
