The weigh-in ceremony for the Lomachenko-Marriaga, Beltrán-Vásquez event took place today in Los Angeles, California.
Costa Rican Bryan Vásquez and his opponent, Mexican, Raymundo Beltrán are scheduled for a lightweight fight, which means they each had to weigh-in at 135 pounds; Ray Beltrán marked 134.4 lbs. while the Costa Rican came in at 136.8 lbs. 1.8 pounds over the weight limit.
Normally when a fighter is a little over the agreed weight limit they are given one or two hours to burn it off, in this case however because the difference is big that would not suffice, so what proceeds is, the fight goes on as scheduled, however, if Vásquez wins the fight, he will Not be awarded the regional titles; on the other hand, if Beltrán wins, he is entitled to the regional belts since he did make weight. Vásquez will also be penalized a percentage of his purse which will be given to his opponent.
Vásquez and his team had posted a video yesterday on Facebook where they claimed the fighter was already in weight; yet, this was not the case today. Vásquez and Beltrán met face to face for the first time yesterday during the final press conference, during which Beltrán said he was taking this fight seriously and respected Bryan as a skillful boxer.
This is not the first time “Tiquito” fails to make weight; he had the same problem just a few years back, in 2014 when he was scheduled to face another Mexican, Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson, he weight over the 130-pound limit; in that occasion Bryan came out with a victory.
Weight fails are not uncommon in combat sports, recently, Carl Frampton missed his weight by one pound; Liam Smith also came in one pound over his limit to face Liam Williams; Chavez Jr. also had several scale fails in his career.
For the main event, current WBO World Lightweight Champion Vasyl Lomachenko and his opponent, Colombian Miguel Marriaga both made weight at 130 lbs and 129.8 lbs respectively.
The event will air live tomorrow on ESPN and ESPN Deportes starting at 8 p.m. Costa Rica time.
