Francisco Fonseca is a 22-year-old native of San Ramon, Alajuela, who just a few months back, in August 19, won the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter-Continental Super Featherweight (130 lbs.) Title by beating Mexican Luis Gonzales in a knockout victory.

Fonseca will be defending his belt in March 2017 in Spain against local fighter Juli Giner.

Giner “The Rock” is a 33-year-old boxer from Cataluña, Spain; he has a record of 20 wins, 8 by way of knockout; 2 losses, 1 by KO and 1 draw; while Fonseca is undefeated with 18 wins, 12 by KO and 1 draw.

The details of the match are still under negotiation.

Just this past December 16th Costa Rica celebrated crowning a new female World Champion, Yokasta Valle; who is now the IBF Light-Mini Flyweight (102 lbs.) Female World Champion.

Valle expects to also defend her belt this new year against a Japanese opponent. Female boxing is very strong and relevant in Asia, specially the smaller weigh categories. Valle’s team is currently under negotiations with the representatives of Saemi Hanagata, an experienced fighter that ranked number 9 in the world.

It seems as though 2017 will bring a lot of great boxing action to Costa Rica.
