Costa Rican congressman part of the National Liberation Party for the province of Guanacaste, Juan Marin, passed away this Thursday after his car crashed against a protection wall in the Rio Segundo, Alajuela tollbooth (General Cañas highway).

The congressman was driving his Hyundai Tucson 2013 when the accident occurred, for reasons still unknown, at around 2:51 a.m., according to the hour registered by the toll booth cameras.
According to preliminary details by the Red Cross and Fire Department, when they arrived Marin was trapped inside the vehicle, they were able to release him but he immediately went into cardiac arrest, despite receiving the immediate medical attention he didn’t respond and was declared dead a few minutes later.

The tollbooth collector working the shift at that hour commented that things happened very fast, he heard the car approaching and then just felt it hit the wall with a huge impact (Watch Video).

The accident also caused big traffic problems in this road, which usually already has heavy traffic, because the Agents of the Judiciary Police in charge of removing the body didn’t arrive at the scene until almost 7 a.m. and the car wasn’t moved until close to 7:30 a.m.

Juan Marin is a native of Hojancha, Guanacaste, he was married and had four children. He initiated his political career back in 2003 when he was elected as a major of Hojancha. He studied law and business administration. He was running again for Congress in the 2018 elections. Members of Congress, as well as the President of Costa Rica, expressed their condolences through social media.
