The Costa Rican embassy in Bern, Switzerland, became the first to enter the Carbon Neutrality Country Program of the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica; it is also the first embassy in Switzerland to reach this accomplishment.

In order to reach carbon neutrality, the embassy had to calculate its emissions, as well as the mitigation and compensation of the same, and complete the verification stages.

The mitigation of greenhouse effect gas emissions was done through the National Forest Financing Fund (Fonafifo), by purchasing Greenhouse Effect Gas Emission Compensation Units applicable to a project in the area of Guanacaste.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, considers this achievement demonstrates the commitment that must exist towards the environment and the sustainability by every institution.

“The carbon neutrality is the responsibility of our generation and Costa Rica must be among the first countries in achieving it, if not the first”, stated Ruben Salas, ambassador to Costa Rica in Switzerland.
