Thirty public institutions and seven international organisms have worked in a coordinated manner to present a protocol for mixed migratory flows in Costa Rica.

The Comprehensive Plan for the Attention of Migratory Flows contemplates a series of actions to offer an efficient response to the migratory flows that enter and/or stay in the country.

“Even though in Costa Rica we have precedents of handling extraordinary migratory flows, the country didn’t have a comprehensive plan for institutions to respond systematically to these extraordinary situations that take place in our borders”, explained Vice-President of Costa Rica and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Epsy Campbell to the Legislative Assembly.

Members of congress and mayors of the different municipalities are invited to participate in the work sessions with the purpose of joining efforts in this matter. Authorities directly related with this topic will be traveling to different areas of the country to work on this situation.

Campbell affirmed that in addition to the different actions that the Government is carrying out to guarantee public security, as well as educational, sanitary and labor security in the country, the coordination with international cooperation has been intensified, particularly with the UN, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Migratory Police is also being reinforced with 98 new officers in total, 25 of which began their work yesterday. Positions for 200 new police officers have also been opened.

“Costa Rica sees with concern the humanitarian crisis that Nicaraguan people are facing, and we are working on minimizing the impacts in Costa Rican territory and to guarantee labor, educational, sanitary and social security”, assured the Vice-President.
