Costa Rica’s National Seismology Network Will Explore Geological Richness of the Country’s South Zone

An ambitious project by the National Seismology Network (RSN) in conjunction with the National Laboratory of Advance Computer Studies (CNCA) and the National Center of High Technology (Cenat) aims to offer answers to some long standing questions that lay underground at the country’s South Zone (Zona Sur).

According to an article by Rebeca Madrigal for the University of Costa Rica, the objective of this project is to learn of the geological characteristics of the subduction area of the south zone through the use of “seismic tomography”, an imagining technique that uses seismic waves generated by earthquakes or explosions to create two and three dimensional images of the Earth’s subsurface.

“The seismic tomography works in a similar way to a CAT scan used in medicine to obtain 3D images of the interior of the human body. With a tomography of the entire country we take advantage of the seismology stations and the thousands of earthquakes registered in them to generate a model that allows us to ‘see’ indirectly the subsurface”, explained the RSN through its Facebook page.

Through the use of this technique they will be able to carry out analysis of up to 200km deep, both in the coastal zone as well as in the Talamanca mountain range.

The project will kick off this January 2018 and will carry on for two years; the information gathered will help establish the location and deepness of earthquakes to explain their origin, it will also allow wa better understanding of the tectonic evolution of Costa Rica and the geology of the subduction zone.
