Popular mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Ronda Rousey suffered a major upset over the weekend in Australia, and United States presidential hopeful Donald Trump, for some reason, gloated over her loss.

Ms. Rousey is known for her alluring looks, charisma and fighting prowess. She is a fighting star with a great record, a technician who specializes in submission and judo moves, and who finds time to appear in major Hollywood film franchises such as The Expendables and Fast and the Furious. During a Sunday match in Australia, Ms. Rousey was unable to hold on to her belt as she faced an underdog who fought an extremely smart match.

Holly Holm may have barely ranked as a contender to Ms. Rousey, but she is an experienced boxer who was able to run all around the Octagon. Ms. Holm tested Ms. Rousey with accurate punches and kicks; like a boxer, she knew how to take advantage of her reach. A spectacular, and dangerous, flying kick brought down Ms. Rousey, who did not lose on a fluke; she lost to an underdog who got her number and dialed it. Ms. Holm knows that this can happen in boxing, and thus it can also happen in MMA.

At one point, Mr. Trump somehow believed that Ms. Rousey was his supporter. About a week ago, Ms. Rousey dispelled this belief during a televised CNN interview as she went public with her support for Bernie Sanders, who is running on the Democratic Party Ticket. This political declaration led Mr. Trump to take to Twitter after Ms. Rousey’s loss; he posted:

Glad to see that @RondaRousey lost her championship fight last night. Was soundly beaten – not a nice person!

Setting aside the Internet trolling antics by the most colorful presidential candidate ever witnessed by United States voters, the fight between Ms. Rousey and Ms. Holm saw heavy betting at sportsbooks in Costa Rica. According to leading Pay-Per-Head (PPH) provider IDSca.com, those who placed underdog wagers on Ms. Holm enjoyed a big payday.

As it happens, talks of a 2016 rematch are already taking place, and IDSca.com reports that the odds still favor Ms. Rousey, but Ms. Holm is no longer such an underdog. As a favorite, Ms. Rousey is around -140 at this time, a far cry from the 20-1 odds she enjoyed right before the fight.

Marketable fighters such as Ms. Rousey tend to keep sportsbooks in Costa Rica busy. MMA betting may not be as active as it is with other sports, but once casual bettors latch on to fighters that make for compelling stories, the betting volume tilts in favor of the sport as it becomes more visible.
