Walmart stores in Costa Rica are launching a campaign starting September 30 and every weekend in October to help breast cancer patients in the country.

Hair stylists will be present at each of the 11 locations the supermarket chain has and will cut the hair of all those willing to donate it to elaborate wigs for patients battling breast cancer.

“An approximate 900 people contributed with this campaign in 2016 and this produced 50 wigs for the National Solidarity Foundation Against Breast Cancer (Fundeso) ”, explained Mariela Pacheco, coordinator of Corporate Affairs for Walmart.

Those interested in donating must have long hair of at least 25 centimeters, clean and completely dry, hair must be up in a pony tail of braid; hair that has been chemically treated is acceptable in some cases.

Patients undergoing radiation therapy can sometimes suffer hair loss which can affect the patient’s self-esteem and along with the illness lead to depression. Wigs can be a great confidence booster and help a patient feel comfortable and less self-conscious.

Making a wig out of human hair requires at least five donors.

The stylists will be available from 9 a.m. through 2 p.m. as follows:
