The Association Costa Rican Network of Accessible Tourism launched the campaign “Dona Tapa” (Donate Lid) an initiative that will allow  reuse lids of plastic bottles and other plastics to be recycled to build walkways on the sand at several Costa Rican beaches that will allow wheelchair use.

The retractable structures would make Costa Rica the first country with accessible beaches in the Central American region, making the life of the disabled population easier and better.

“This is a project of Social Responsibility where we will collect plastic of the types 2,4 and 5, we will evaluate it and recycle it creating ‘plastic wood’. We will use it to build accessible solutions all around the country, retractable walkways with this material for the beaches, this is our lead project”, said Stephanie Sheehy Protti, Founder and Executive Director of the Network.

Initially the project will focus on the beaches that have received the recognition of the program Ecological Blue Flag of the Costa Rican Aqueduct and Sewage Institute and the Costa Rican Tourism Board. Currently close to 107 beaches have been awarded the Ecological Blue Flag.
