Fans of quality rock music and cinema in Costa Rica continue to be a lucky bunch. This country is already a magnet and source of inspiration for some of the coolest rock bands, and in the next few weeks Costa Rica will host a couple of film festivals where Hollywood celebrities such as Danny Glover will be guests of honor.

This weekend, good rock music and excellent cinema come together at the trendy Steinvorth building in the heart of San Jose, one of the most lovable cities in the world -according to the respected Monocle magazine from the United Kingdom. The screening of Searching for Sugar, winner of the 2013 Oscar for Best Documentary, aims to transform the Steinvorth into a different kind of movie theater in Costa Rica.

In the early 1970s, Sixto Rodriguez was a Detroit folksinger who had a short-lived recording career with only two well received but non-selling albums. Unknown to Rodriguez, his musical story continued in South Africa where he became a pop music icon and inspiration for generations. Long rumored there to be dead by suicide, a few fans in the 1990s decided to seek out the truth of their hero’s fate. What follows is a bizarrely heartening story in which they found far more in their quest than they ever hoped, while a Detroit construction laborer discovered that his lost artistic dreams came true after all.

Searching for Sugar Man also took awards at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). In total, Searching for Sugar Man has accumulated more than two dozen awards.

If you don’t know about the wonderful music of “Rod Riguez,” you are not alone. Sixto Diaz Rodriguez is definitely not a one-hit wonder, he is a serious rock musician who never found much fame or accolades in the Americas. His style is firmly rooted in the 1970s folk and psychedelic rock fusion; many of his songs serve as social commentaries, and in South Africa they became anti-Apartheid anthems. Sixto toured with Australian rock band Midnight Oil in the early 1980s; he then stopped performing and went back to this working-class roots in Detroit as a construction laborer.

To a certain extent, Sixto’s music prompts comparison to Bob Dylan. If you are not familiar with his music, the screening of Searching for Sugar Man is an excellent starting point. Costa Rican rock musician Felipe Perez will perform some of the music of Sixto Rodriguez at the Steinvorth. This building, which is one of the oldest in Costa Rica, is on Calle Primera (First Street), about half a block north of the Wendy’s on Avenida Central, the main pedestrial boulevard in San Jose. The screenings are tonight and tomorrow at 8:30 p.m.
